今回は従位接続詞で導かれる副詞節の〈主語＋be動詞〉の省略についてお伝えします。

次の文が正しいか間違っているか考えましょう。間違っている場合は正しく書き直しましょう。
1. I visited a lot of sightseeing spots while staying in the city.
2. Please brush your teeth before going to bed.
3. Before sent to the museum, the picture was kept in that temple.
4. I went to bed early yesterday because tired.
5. I stayed up all night though tired.
6. If treated roughly, this will be broken.
7. Ask me questions, if any.
8. Unless treated roughly, the paper will not be torn.
9. Once released, the news will spread quickly.
10. As far as seen, the field is filled with flowers.
11. You have to come, whether sick or well.

解説と解答
まずは接続詞について復習しましょう。
接続詞は「語と語」、「句(SVを含まない２語以上)と句」、「節(SVを含む２語以上)と節」をつなぐ役割を果たします。
接続詞には等位接続詞と従位接続詞があります。
１．等位接続詞
(and / but / or / nor / so / for)
★文法的に対等な語と語、句と句、節と節をつなぐ
★２つの節に共通している語句を(1つの節で)省略できる。
例）You can use this computer, but (you) need to get her permission.
２．従位接続詞
(that / whether / if / unless / because / since / as / though / when / while / as soon as / the moment / until / by the time / after / before / until / as long as / as far as / in case / for fear など)
★文法的に対等でない主節と従属節をつなぐ。
★主節は文の中核となり、それだけで意味を成すが、従属節だけでは意味を成さない。
★名詞節を作る従位接続詞(that/if/whether)と、副詞節を作る従位接続詞(when/becauseなど)がある。
★基本的に従属節内の語句は省略できない。
ここ大事！
★例外的に、次の従位接続詞で導かれる副詞節の主語が主節の主語と同じとき、〈主語＋be動詞〉を省略することが多い。
when …する時
while …している間に
as …する時に、…しながら
if もし…ならば
unless …でなければ
once いったん…すると
(al)though …だけれども
whether A or B AであろうとBであろうと
1. ○ I visited a lot of sightseeing spots while staying in the city.
接続詞 while の後は I was を省略できる。
2. ○ Please brush your teeth before going to bed.
接続詞 before の後は〈主語＋be動詞を〉省略できないが、前置詞の before の後に動名詞 goingを続けることは可能。
3. ✖ Before sent to the museum, the picture was kept in that temple.
→○ Before it was sent to the museum, the picture was kept in that temple.
接続詞 before の後は〈主語＋be動詞〉を省略できない。
→○ Before being sent to the museum, the picture was kept in that temple.
前置詞 before の後に動名詞 being を続けることは可能。
4. ✖ I went to bed early yesterday because tired.
→○ I went to bed early yesterday because I was tired.
接続詞 because の後は〈主語＋be動詞〉を省略できない。
5. ○ I stayed up all night though tired.
接続詞 though の後は I was を省略できる。
6. ○ If treated roughly, this will be broken.
接続詞 if の後は it is を省略できる。
7. ○ Ask me questions, if any.

Ask me questions if there are any.
副詞節の主語が主節の主語と違う場合も、慣用的に if / as long as (…する限り)に続く節内の〈主語＋be動詞〉や〈there is/are〉を省略することがある。
if any もしあれば

as long as necessary 必要な限り
as long as possible 可能な限り
8. ○ Unless treated roughly, the paper will not be torn.
接続詞 unless の後は it is を省略できる。
9. ○ Once released, the news will spread quickly.
接続詞 once の後は it is を省略できる。
10. ✖ As far as seen, the field is filled with flowers.
→○ As far as we can see, the field is filled with flowers.
接続詞 as far as の後は〈主語＋be動詞〉を省略できない。
注)
As far as it is seen と受動態にすることも可能だが、能動態の方が自然。
11. ○ You have to come, whether sick or well.
接続詞 whether の後は you are を省略できる。
12. ✖ Bring an umbrella in case raining.
→ Bring an umbrella in case it rains.
接続詞 in case の後は〈主語＋動詞〉を省略できない。
13. ○ As a child, he used to play soccer every day.
接続詞 as が「…する時に」という意味で使われるとき、 he was を省略できる。
(他の意味のときは、省略できない）
この as は前置詞と考えることもできる。
14. ✖ Since tired, I went home immediately after work.
接続詞 since の後は〈主語＋be動詞を〉省略できない。
注）
since には前置詞の用法もあるが、「…以来ずっと」という意味で、理由を表す前置詞はない。
まとめ
原則的に従属節内の語句は省略できませんが、特定の従位接続詞に続く節では例外的に省略できる場合があります。
例外となる従位接続詞を覚えておきましょう。
