今回は、間違いが多い比較級と最上級の表現についてお伝えします。
問題
次の文は正しいでしょうか、それとも間違っているでしょうか。
1. Do not push me any farther.
2. Tom has CDs more than me.
3. She is taller than me.
4. Tom is taller than any other students in his class.
5. Tom is senior than me.
6. The population of Tokyo is larger than Sapporo.
7. He is the very best baseball player.
8. This baseball player is the much best.
9. She is my most favorite singer.
10. She is very taller than me.
解答と解説
1. Do not push me any farther.
✖ 正しくは Do not push me any further.
far は比較級が2種類あります。
fartherは距離がさらに遠いという意味
furtherは度合いや程度がさらに深くという意味
2. Tom has CDs more than me.
✖ 正しくは Tom has more CDs than me【またはI】.
原級は Tom has many CDs.
「many＋名詞」をひとかたまりで考えます。
比較級も同じように「more＋名詞」の語順になります。
3. She is taller than me.
〇 than を接続詞と考えると She is taller than I (am). ですが、特に口語ではthanの後に代名詞だけが来る場合は目的格を用いることが多いようです。
なお、その場合thanは前置詞と考えられます。
4. Tom is taller than any other students in his class.
✖ 正しくはTom is taller than any other student in his class.
「比較級＋any other ＋単数名詞」で「他のどの～よりも…」という意味を表します。any otherの後ろには単数名詞が続くことに注意しましょう。
5. Tom is senior than me.
✖ 正しくは Tom is senior to me.
「～より」がいつもthanとは限りません。
以下のように than ではなく toを使う形容詞もあります。
be senior to ～ (～より年上である）
be junior to ～（～より年下である）
be superior to ～ （～より優れている）
be inferior to ～（～より劣っている）
など
6. The population of Tokyo is larger than Sapporo.
✖ 正しくはThe population of Tokyo is larger than that of Sapporo.
比較するのは「東京の人口と札幌」ではなく「東京の人口と札幌の人口」です。
比較する２つをそろえる必要があります。
7. He is the very best baseball player.
〇 最上級をveryで強調することができます。
「the very ＋最上級」の語順にも注意しましょう。
8. This baseball player is the much best.
✖ 正しくは This baseball player is much the best.
「much the ＋最上級」の語順です。
この他、by far を使って強調することもできます。
9. She is my most favorite singer.
✖ 正しくは She is my favorite singer.
favorite は「一番好きな」という意味で、これだけで最上級の意味を持っています。従って、原則的に比較級や最上級で用いられることはありません。
10. She is very taller than me.
✖ 正しくは She is much taller than me.
原級や最上級は veryで強調できますが、比較級をveryで強調することはできません。
その他、far / even / a lot などを使って比較級を強調することができます。
比較級や最上級が使いこなせると説得力のある説明ができますので、是非マスターしましょう。
