間違えやすい接続詞 | 理由や結果などを導く接続詞

単語の意味を覚えているだけでは十分とはいえません。間違えやすい接続詞の違いを理解しましょう。

 

問題

空欄に、理由や結果を表す適切な接続詞を入れましょう。

 

 1.  (        ) we are ordering a large number, could you give us a discount?

 

 2.  I was very tired yesterday.  That's  (       ) I took a taxi.

 

 3.  I did not talk to Tom.  That's (         ) I did not recognize him.

  

 4.  I could not pass the test (         ) I did not have enough time to prepare for it.

  

 5.  (         )  the task was difficult, we made it!

 

 6.  The desk was heavy, (        ) I could not carry it by myself.

  

 7.  I did not pass the test, (        )  I felt satisfied with myself.

 

 8. He taught how to cook the dish in easy English (     ) (      ) everyone could understand him.

 

 9. Take an umbrella with you (     ) (      ) it rains.

解答と解説

1. Since  ) we are ordering a large number, could you give us a discount?

 

as にも「~なので」という意味がありますが、理由を表す際は because や since が使われることが多いようです。

 

  

 2.  I was very tired yesterday.  That's  (  why   ) I took a taxi.

 

 

 3.  I did not talk to Tom.  That's ( because  ) I did not recognize him.

recognize は「見分けがつく、それとわかる」などという意味です。

比較

That's why の後には「結果」を表す内容が続きます。 ( 2.)

That's because の後には「理由」を表す内容が続きます。 (3.)

 

  

 4.  I could not pass the test (  because  ) I did not have enough time to prepare for it.

比較

絶対的な決まりではありませんが、一般的に次のような違いがあります。

 

相手が知らない理由を新情報として伝えるときには because  (4.)

 

相手が知っている理由を伝えるときには since   (1.)

 

 

 

 5.  (  Although  )  the task was difficult, we made it!

比較

予想通りの結果になった場合は、その理由を because で導きます。 (4.)

予想通りでない結果になった場合は、その状況を although で導きます。 (5.)

 

 

 6.  The desk was heavy, (  so  ) I could not carry it by myself.

 比較

because の後には理由を表す内容が続きます。 (4.)

, so の後には結果を表す内容が続きます。 (6.)

 

 

  7.  I did not pass the test, (  but  )  I felt satisfied with myself.

比較

予想通りの結果は「 , so」 で導きます。 (6.)

通常 so の前にコンマを用います。

 

予想通りでない結果、または対立や逆説を表す内容は「(,)  but」 で導きます。 (7.)

 

 

 8. He taught how to cook the dish in easy English (  so  ) (  that  ) everyone could understand him.

( that は省略可能です。)

比較

通常、結果を表す so の前にはコンマを用います (6.)

 

通常、目的を表す so (that) の前にはコンマを用いません。 (8.)

 

 

  9. Take an umbrella with you (  in  ) (  case ) it rains.

 

 

10.  I wrote her phone number ( for  ) ( fear  ) that I would forget it. 

( that は省略可能です。)

比較

so ( that ) の後には目的を表す内容が続きます。

通常 that 節内では can / could / will / would を用います。 (8.)

 

in case ~/ for fear (that) ~は「~だといけないので」という意味です。 (9.) (10.)

 

 

 

接続詞と次に続く内容が一致しないと、意味が不明瞭になってしまいます。

 

特にここに挙げたような接続詞の使い方に注意し、正しく使いこなしましょう。
