英語の間違えやすい表現 |形容詞 |year old それとも years old

今回は間違えやすい表現の確認です。

 

問題

次の英文は正しいでしょうか、それとも間違っているでしょうか。

1.  She has a three-years-old son.

 

2.  Her son is three years old.

 

3.  I have a ten-dollars bill.

 

4.  How much?  It's ten dollars.

 

5.  That building is thirity stories high.

 

6.  Look at that thirty-stories building.

 

7. I went to an English-spoken country.

 

8.  He got a high-paying job.

 

 

解答と解説

1.  She has a three-years-old son.

→  ~ a three-year-old son. (単数)

 

すぐ近くで名詞を修飾する場合(限定用法と呼ばれます)、単数形で表します。

ここ大事!

2語以上が集まって一つの意味を成す場合(このような単語は複合語と呼ばれます)、ハイフンで結ばれることが多いようです。ハイフンで結ばれていると、一つ一つの単語がバラバラではなく、固まりで一つの意味を成していることがわかりやすくなります。

 

 

2.  Her son is three years old. 

 

3.  I have a ten-dollars bill.

→  ~ a ten-dollar bill. (単数)

 

4.  How much?  It's ten dollars.

 

5.  That building is thirity stories high.

 

6.  Look at that thirty-stories building.

→  ~ that thirty-story building.  (単数)

 

7.  I went to an English-spoken country.

→  ~ an English-speaking country.

英語は話されるのですが(受動ですが)、English-speaking country で「英語が話される国」という意味です。

 

 

8.  He got a high-paying job.

He got a high-paid job. ともいいます。

 

 

 

ちょっとした違いではありますが、細かいことまで注意して正しい表現を覚えたいですね。
